Case Study: UNHCR "Journey of a Dollar" Animated Campaign

Animated Explainer Video

The Challenge

USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's fundraising partner in the United States, needed a compelling animated nonprofit video that would transparently illustrate the impact of donor contributions. The challenge was to explain complex global humanitarian operations while emotionally connecting with potential donors to drive action.

The Video

Our 60-second animated explainer for UNHCR takes viewers on the "Journey of a Dollar" – showing exactly how donations translate into real-world impact for refugees worldwide. Using a clean, minimalist illustration style with a distinct blue color palette that aligns with UNHCR's brand identity, we created a visually cohesive narrative that follows a dollar's journey from donation to direct impact.

The Animated Nonprofit Video

The video uses a literal journey of a dollar bill as a visual device to guide viewers through UNHCR's global operations:

Visual Style

The animation style features:

  • A distinctive flat illustration style with limited color palette dominated by UNHCR's signature blue
  • Thoughtful scene transitions that maintain visual flow while spanning global locations
  • Character designs that sensitively represent diverse refugee populations
  • Creative visual metaphors that simplify complex humanitarian logistics

Multi-Platform Distribution Strategy

To maximize reach and effectiveness, we designed the animation for multiple distribution channels:

  • OTT via MNTN: Full 16:9 format optimized for streaming TV platforms
  • Social Media: Created additional 9:16 vertical and 1:1 square aspect ratio versions for optimal performance across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok
  • A/B Testing: Produced versions with alternative CTAs to identify the highest-converting message

This multi-format approach allowed the video to maintain its visual impact regardless of where viewers encountered it, while the testing methodology helped identify the most effective call-to-action for different audience segments.

Animation Techniques

Our team employed several innovative animation techniques to maximize the video's emotional impact:

  • Visual Continuity: The dollar bill serves as a visual anchor throughout the animation, guiding viewers' attention from scene to scene
  • Smooth Geographic Transitions: Instead of jarring cuts between locations, we used the global map as a transition device to maintain narrative flow
  • Split-Screen Visualization: During the "immediate impact" sequence, we employed a split-screen technique showing donation on one side and simultaneous global impact on the other
  • Symbolic Color Changes: Red crisis points transforming to yellow represent tangible impact in a visually immediate way

Why This Project Matters

In the competitive landscape of nonprofit fundraising, clear communication about impact is essential for donor engagement. Our animated nonprofit video production for UNHCR demonstrates how strategic storytelling and professional animation can transform complex humanitarian operations into a compelling narrative that inspires action.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
